Blu Jemz @ Czar Bar tonight

Filed under: kansas city, mp3, music, news, shows — admin @ 11:30 am

If you are much of a fan of the new wave of weird underground hiphop - sort of like wonky but with dignity, then Blu Jemz is worth catching tonight at the Czar Bar

Warning, this is a Scion-sponsored show.  No, not the Basic Channel act, but the sub-species of Toyota.

Meaning it’s also free, with a not-quite soul-selling RSVP required.  Use a fake email address right.

Go here to RSVP.

Locals Nomathematics are hosting, and Pase Rock, Designer Drugs, Da Hardy Boyz, and Franki Chan are all playing as well.  Not sure on set times, so here’s to hoping Blu Jemz doesn’t get stuck in the closing spot.

Blu Jemz’ 2008 Beat Machine compilation, which is also sponsored by the car company, is absolutely worth getting.  I’ll only feel comfortable about Scion’s sponsorship if I rip them off a little bit more, so I’m going to pass it on to you.  Download it here.

Here’s the tracklist - it’s fire.

01 O Spindles - Intro (Dark Room)
02 Dorian Concept - Sandwich Terror
03 Bullion - Keep It Tidy
04 Exile - Extra FUNK
05 Flying Lotus - Heat Wave 2
06 Mike Slott - Boxed In (Inst. Mix)

I guess my only thought is that I’m glad Steve Albini did not engineer the new album.

The Everybodyfields break up

Filed under: music, news — admin @ 9:29 am

Sad news out of Johnson City, Tennessee yesterday, as Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews are calling it quits as the Everybodyfields. Both will continue on with solo projects, but it’s sad to say we’re losing the wonderful harmonies the two have created over the last several years with each other.

We had the pleasure of catching the duo (as a trio) in Pittsburgh a few years ago at the Quiet Storm, and it was one of the best musical experiences we had in our short stay in the city.

Best of luck to both Jill and Sam, but here’s to hoping both aren’t shy about appearing on each other’s future work.

Popular Private BitTorrent Music Site Oink Raided and Shutdown by Interpol

Filed under: music, news — admin @ 2:36 pm

This morning OiNK a popular BitTorrent site was shutdown by Interpol. The servers for the site (located in Amsterdam) were seized in a series of raids last week. In Middlesbrough, a 24 year old male IT worker was arrested and is being held and questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and infringement of copyright law. At the same time his employer (from a large multi-national company) and his fathers home were also raided according to the BBC.

This comes after a 2 year investigation by British and Dutch police, music industry bodies IFPI and the British Phonographic Industry. The International Federation of the Phonographic Indstry says this year OiNK had leaked 60 major pre-release albums.

P2P watchdog site Torrentfreak had more details, saying that the law enforcement agencies were currently looking to have the identities of users turned over to authorities. The site boasted nearly 180,000 registered members according to the story. It’s highly unlikely that they will track down all the the registered members due to the disperse international user base, and then subject them to British law.

a thousand thanks

Filed under: music, news, review — admin @ 12:47 am

we are about to roll over a thousand visitors since switching over to this dedicated url from the old blogger site — so thanks!

kansas city has some really interesting shows coming up over the course of the next few weeks, mostly at the record bar.

the first one up is this sunday with califone. they have quite a few live clips hosted via youtube in their multimedia section, which will give you a good idea of what to expect sunday night.

october 6th showcases two local kansas city-area bands, doris henson (who are actually 5 guys playing some very interesting rawk) and the republic tigers. the doris henson stuff is pretty good, but it’s the tracks on republic tiger’s myspace that are really catching my attention . . . here’s a couple of them:

republic tigers - made concrete

republic tigers - buildings and mountains

i’m really impressed with the polished, multi-layered approach this band is taking.

here’s a few from doris henson also:

doris henson - dark times for the light side of the earth (from 2005’s give me all your money, on desoto)

doris henson - sidestepping (from 2005’s give me all your money, on desoto)

the band also features localish electronic experimentalists namelessnumberheadman covering their song “saturday night”:

namelessnumberheadman - saturday night (doris henson cover)

october 10th brings a rare treat in kansas city — two shows worth seeing in one night. the early show will be the 7PM start of the incredible thanksgiving at the icehouse, which is apparently moving over to the el torreon space sometime next week. the band is essentially the brainchild of portland, oregon’s adrian orange, and has featured the usual stellar guest work that goes along with the tightly-knit music community of that region — phil elvrum (microphones/mt eerie) and kyle fields (little wings) are kindred spirits, and like them, orange has built a dedicated following across the country due to his endless touring. i was unfortunate to be out of town when he played kansas city earlier this year, and i’m thankful for the opportunity to see one of my favorite artists in a live setting.

thanksgiving - deer

openers drakkar sauna are on orange’s marriage records label, and hail from lawrence, kansas. they have quite a few tracks up, and here’s a few for you:

drakkar sauna - glissade pressee

drakkar sauna - very much alone part 2: the coke binge

drakkar sauna - hello, my love has faded

the record bar then comes with a worthwhile triple bill featuring caspian, actors & actresses, and trilobite. i was familiar with caspian through their 2005 debut ep you are the conductor on dopamine, which is a very nice collection of crushing post-rock. as far as the other two bands go, it was off to myspace to check them out, and doing so has ensured me that this will not be a show to miss.

here’s a few caspian tracks to warm you up, since they’ll be headlining this show:

caspian - further in (from the you are the conductor ep)

caspian - loft (from the 2004 demo)

caspian - last rites (live)

i also highly recommend checking out the music section of the caspian site for the ambient material they’ve posted at the bottom. these are very nice loops and it’s great to see a band willing to give this sort of thing away instead of just sitting on it.

although they are doing several dates with caspian, actors & actresses are from kansas city, and i’m sure the relationship is working out thanks largely to a shared idealogy of creating glacial, crescendoing walls of sound. they do however bring vocals into the mix, which is a nice change of pace in the vastly instrumental world of post rock. they have a two tracks up on their myspace, but just this one to share:

actors & actresses - shellshocked

the other band on the bill, trilobite, was a total mystery to me as well, but i think this will be the band that ultimately makes the night complete. i’m hoping that the early start of the thanksgiving show will allow me to make it for this roots-folk-americana outfit. trilobite is centered around mark ray lewis, a noted writer and the son of a hannibal, missouri preacher, and these influences show heavily in the dark, dusty, reverent music he creates. this stuff will seem out of place once actors & actresses and caspian have hit the stage, but i can’t think of a better way to segue between the two shows. check out the tracks trilobite have on their myspace:

trilobite - pumpkin farmer (from the plains of augustine, catamount)

trilobite - samsara (from the plains of augustine, catamount)

trilobite - lucky toes (from the plains of augustine, catamount)

there’s several other shows coming up that i’m really looking forward to (charalambides and tara jane o’neil on november 17th!) and i’m very happy to say that the kansas city scene is continuing to improve — in no small part of course to the efforts of the record bar. keep an eye out for more coverage of upcoming stuff in the next few days . . .

the speed of silence vinyl podcast vol 2

Filed under: Uncategorized, mp3, news — admin @ 3:42 pm

we’ve got a new series of podcasts up built around one simple rule - they’re mixed directly from vinyl. scott kicked us off earlier with his mix, and for my first installment, i went with an all-over approach with one thing in mind - stay out of the mix as much as possible. this runs the range from ambient to dub to tech-house to fugazi to local indie bands. enjoy!

run time: 1hr 00min 20sec continuous mix

format: 320kbp/s

download here

01 delta waves - a1 (from the andromeda drone 7″)

delta waves - andromeda drone 7

this debut 7″ is quite a bit different than the later work of this group. as its title would suggest, it’s built on ambient space dronescapes, but doesn’t just settle for boring repetition. this can be picked up from the band’s current label, airbend records.

02 hammock - stranded under endless sky (from the stranded under endless sky ep)

hammock - stranded under endless sky ep

this just arrived in the mail this past week, thanks to the hammock website. for $4 (plus a little bit more for shipping) you really cannot beat it. the debut ep from one of the biggest up-and-coming ambient/shoegaze/postrock bands around, this release and its title track demonstrate right out of the gate why the anticipation among fans for the band’s last album, raising your voice . . . trying to stop an echo was some of the most ferverent i have ever seen.

03 catherine wheel - saccharine (from the black metallic 12″)

catherine wheel - black metallica 12

catherine wheel’s first two albums are easily in my top 5 as a combination, and appear in my top 10 on their own. “saccharine” is a b-side to one of the best tracks of all time, “black metallic” from their first album, ferment., and appears in a slightly different form on the b-sides/rarities compilation like cats & dogs. this is defniitely one of the darker tracks from catherine wheel’s golden era, and undoubtedly helped make picking this single up on ebay several years ago fully worth it.

04 massive attack vs mad professor - protection (radiation ruling the nation dub)

massive attack - protection remixes 2x12

i read about the no protection dub album in the back of a huh! magazine in 1994, my junior year of high school. i was able to track down the protection album prior to finding this, and beyond the lead-off track, was just not impressed. it was truly a case of not being ready for the sounds on the album, and when i came across the no protection remix album a few months later, it became apparent to me how incredible of a tool the studio can be.

this track is taken from the 2×12″ remix set for protection, which includes two brian eno mixes and mixes from underdog, dom t, j sw!ft, and the album mix. i found this along with hundreds of other gems lost between the mountains of bluegrass and blues at the long-gone music exchange here in kansas city.

05 anti pop consortium - is your world flat? (from tragic epilogue)

anti-pop consortium - tragic epilogue

i was at a boring house party, standing around drinking cheap beer and talking to friends. a friend who i’ve always had a playful competition regarding music taste with showed up and dropped this album into the cd player. it seriously must have played three times straight through. i thankfully found two copies of this on vinyl in the $3 cut out bin at the Troost 7th Heaven, and while many of the tracks are just a bit too abstract for me, there are more than enough smooth beats and hyper-intelligent rhymes to keep it moving.

06 recloose - MYM 230 (rip) (carl craig mix) (from the so this is the dining room? ep)

recloose - so this is the dining room ep

i bought this ep on cd originally, and had the opportunity to grab it on vinyl shortly thereafter when a large online cd retailer was closing out their record section on the cheap. this detroit-based producer has since moved on to more organic sounds, but this early release, under the guidance of detroit maestro carl craig, was definitely something different when it came out. there is a funkiness and life to the glitch-tech going on here that is undeniable.

07 hakan lidbo - coming clean (from the tech-house couture lp)

hakan lidbo - tech house couture

the bass and synth on this like a slow-motion jedi light saber battle. that is cool enough for me. the super-swede lidbo opens a little window into his mind on this one and it looks like everyone’s wearing satin pajamas. i picked this up at the now-defunct deepfix records here in kansas city.

08 fugazi - waiting room (from fugazi ep)

fugazi - fugazi ep

i found this for 79 cents in a thrift store in independence missouri, along with the margin walker ep. there is absolutely nothing better than dropping this track on an unsuspecting listener during any type of set. it is a guaranteed floor filler.

09 del rey - dust huntress (from darkness & distance)

del rey - darkness & distance

this chicago-based group mixes some very interesting rhythmic approaches into the postrock equation. combining aggressive and moody guitars with shuffling, mathy drums (and occasional beat programming), i’ve been impressed by everything i’ve heard from these guys. i ordered this copy from insound.

10 laika - sugar daddy (from silver apples of the moon)

laika - silver apples of the moon

this was one of the very first albums i upgraded to vinyl from a cd copy. the rhythms and noises on this track destroyed my mid-western, metal-fed teenage mind back then, and it still stands as a great track to drop into an eclectic set. i picked this one up at the now-gone recycled sounds in kansas city.

11 psychic ills - untitled (from dins)

psychic ills - dins

a good solid noise/rock/psych/drone album through and through. this is one of the quieter, shorter pieces on the album, and makes for a good segue track. this one comes to you courtesy of the fine people at needmore discs.

12 lambchop - crawl away (from thriller)

lambchop - thriller

when i came across this in the bin at zebedee’s rpm on 39th street, i was, to say the least, pretty surprised. why would anyone give up a lambchop album? why? but they did, and now i have it. this is the city slang german import of the album no less. kurt wagner and friends do it right on this one.

13 namelessnumberheadman - branches of branches of branches (from wires reply)

namelessnumberheadman - wires reply

one of the more successful recent bands to germinate in the kansas city area and then rightfully move away (albeit only a few hours away to columbia, mo), namelessnumberheadman is a band that’s all over the place. sure, the indie-tronic thing has one or two effigies that are the marquees for the sound . . . but i just cannot argue with these guys. yes, you will probably end up comparing this track to one of said scene figurepoints, but consider that a remark on the quality of this little trio. this lp was purchased at the record release party for yes, the st ives vinyl release. a cd version won’t be out for a little bit longer.

14 the life & times - mighty joe moon (from the split 10″ with nueva volcano)

the life & times/nueva vulcano split 10

as in any good movie, it’s a always a good idea to include - and preferably end with - a cover song. in this case, kansas city’s own the life & times provide their cover of grant lee buffalo’s mighty joe moon and do the track justice. these guys have a long lineage in midwestern rock and thankfully are not showing signs of letting up with the quality rock any time soon. i picked up this split 10″ at a show a couple of months ago.

detroit digital vinyl broadens the frontlines for underground resistance

Filed under: music, news — admin @ 12:31 am

detroit digital vinyl is an online record store run by legendary detroit institutions submerge records and underground resistance. the aim of the shop is to provide an outlet for legitimate, high-quality digital versions of the UR catalog, as well as the many sub-factions of the determinedly independent detroit techno, house, electro, and hiphop movement.

this is not just another web portal for yet another record label - it is another example of the determination with which the underground resistance clan has gone to remain steadfastly an entirely self-supporting unit. for example, until a recent relocation along with the rest of UR headquarters, their record store, somewhere in detroit, was located in a secret location in urban detroit and available only to those who made an appointment in advance, held a connection with the clan, or were fortunate enough to stumble upon it. given that the collective is known not only for the immense pedigree of its members and associates, but for the exclusive, limited nature of its productions, this store is considered the holy grail of techno djs around the world. additionally, the collective has been known to hold press conferences in abandoned buildings in the wastelands of urban detroit, seperated from the press by a gulf of darkness and refusing to take questions after the “briefing” has been delivered.

however, this unit is not about elitism - underground resistance is known around the world for a realistic approach to ideal futurism, its emphasis on community involvement, and an uncompromising insistance on sincerity and genuiness at every step. it is with this idea of giving that another great feature of detroit digital vinyl has just recently come to life: the free mix download section. The first mix is entitled the plan - before the collapse, and is available here.

the tracklist:

1. The Acid DiDJ
Acid

20. Juan Atkins

21. Slam
Virtuoso
(Soma)

as with all things UR-related, this project is fueled by the collective’s intense sense of futuristic individualism,

This is the subject of our first experiment. We are going to tell a story through a 3 part mix series. With part one we start in a city and a people that are vibrant, moving and advancing. This first set is split into 5 movements:

1-4 Welcome

5-7 People

8-14 Sunset to Sunrise

15-20 The Wheels Of Industry

21-22 Hope For The Future

The next mix will pick up in the story where this one left off. This mix was done in one take with no edits in The Plan’s make shift bunker during 2 week Escapism session number 26. This project was concieved years before and we have picked this very moment to put it into action. We beleive that spinning records can be much more than just matching beats, working the faders and eq’s and just making people dance. This music is capable of putting forth messages beyond just the content of the tracks alone. Look beneath the surface……….

the mix itself runs the gammut of UR sounds, from bright alien acid treble washes to tribal ritual drums of past and future centuries. this is moon music, mood music, and most importantly, motion music. for those not familiar with the far-reaching universe of underground resistance, submerge, los hermanos, or the many other factions, associates, and acquaintances emanating from this movement, this mix will serve as a educational and enlightening introduction.

edith frost @ the warhol, pittsburgh 2/17

Filed under: music, news, shows — admin @ 12:22 am

Friday, February 17, 2006
Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, PA)
With the Zincs and Emily Rodgers

edith frost. just say it a few times, and you might be able to get a good idea of what her music sounds like.

if you’re getting visions of leather-clad dwarves swinging maces down on hapless gnomes while orcs and wyverns battle beneath the blood red tri-moon, well — you’re fairly off the mark, but it’s understandable. at least, i hope i’m not alone in understanding why it’s understandable, but regardless . . .

this is music that straddles the well-worn wooden bar between the have-nots and the have-another-ones. the word “chanteuse” has been used, and fittingly so - the richness of her deep, enchanting voice helps to convey the half-open-eyed story-moments she allows us to experience - experiences that the listener feels drawn into and an active participant in, for better or for worse. this isn’t music for the eternally hopeless, nor is it meant to buoy your best day — it’s grounded in the type of reality that a million years of prime-time tv lineups will never capture.

sure, in this day of the stadium-sized group cry-alongs and made-for-tv emotional outbursts, it’s kind of easy to question an artist’s sincerety. with frost, though, just heading over to her site and reading around a little bit gives you a real feel for her voice as a person — salt of the earth, ineed. check out her mp3 page while you’re over there for some great music from her career.

after a bit of a hiatus - 4 years as a matter of fact - let’s all hope the accolades ms frost’s drag city return it’s a game has been gathering are enough to convince this amazing songwriter to continue to grace us with her presence.

by the way, she’s also got a nice collection of demos on one of my favorite netlabels, comfortstand. head over here to download it in full for free - this is a great example of an artist whose demos alone are more polished and crafted than most all of the so-called “finished” products trotted out by the big labels.

also, i should mention that opener and pittsbugh native emily rodgers has some very nice streaming versions of songs on her recent release emily rodgers & her majesty’s stars available on her site here. her myspace indicates that she and kevin finn, who she’s recently split an ep with titled in spring alchemy, will be opening for mi and l’au at the garfield artworks on march 8th — the same night as the rob dickinson show at club cafe . . . i might have to pull a cross-town double bill on that one.
