my good friend basic has has just posted her premier podcast mix, and you might be able to tell by this tracklist that she’s quite the source for intelligent, classy, and funky techno, especially of the minimal persuasion. she does of course utilize her superb skills in design (her day job) for the artwork as well.

detroit digital vinyl broadens the frontlines for underground resistance

detroit digital vinyl is an online record store run by legendary detroit institutions submerge records and underground resistance. the aim of the shop is to provide an outlet for legitimate, high-quality digital versions of the UR catalog, as well as the many sub-factions of the determinedly independent detroit techno, house, electro, and hiphop movement.

this is not just another web portal for yet another record label – it is another example of the determination with which the underground resistance clan has gone to remain steadfastly an entirely self-supporting unit. for example, until a recent relocation along with the rest of UR headquarters, their record store, somewhere in detroit, was located in a secret location in urban detroit and available only to those who made an appointment in advance, held a connection with the clan, or were fortunate enough to stumble upon it. given that the collective is known not only for the immense pedigree of its members and associates, but for the exclusive, limited nature of its productions, this store is considered the holy grail of techno djs around the world. additionally, the collective has been known to hold press conferences in abandoned buildings in the wastelands of urban detroit, seperated from the press by a gulf of darkness and refusing to take questions after the “briefing” has been delivered.

however, this unit is not about elitism – underground resistance is known around the world for a realistic approach to ideal futurism, its emphasis on community involvement, and an uncompromising insistance on sincerity and genuiness at every step. it is with this idea of giving that another great feature of detroit digital vinyl has just recently come to life: the free mix download section. The first mix is entitled the plan – before the collapse, and is available here.

as with all things UR-related, this project is fueled by the collective’s intense sense of futuristic individualism,

This is the subject of our first experiment. We are going to tell a story through a 3 part mix series. With part one we start in a city and a people that are vibrant, moving and advancing. This first set is split into 5 movements:

1-4 Welcome

5-7 People

8-14 Sunset to Sunrise

15-20 The Wheels Of Industry

21-22 Hope For The Future

The next mix will pick up in the story where this one left off. This mix was done in one take with no edits in The Plan’s make shift bunker during 2 week Escapism session number 26. This project was concieved years before and we have picked this very moment to put it into action. We beleive that spinning records can be much more than just matching beats, working the faders and eq’s and just making people dance. This music is capable of putting forth messages beyond just the content of the tracks alone. Look beneath the surface……….

the mix itself runs the gammut of UR sounds, from bright alien acid treble washes to tribal ritual drums of past and future centuries. this is moon music, mood music, and most importantly, motion music. for those not familiar with the far-reaching universe of underground resistance, submerge, los hermanos, or the many other factions, associates, and acquaintances emanating from this movement, this mix will serve as a educational and enlightening introduction.
